@grahamellis6029 You don't seem to understand that distance is in itself a barrier to trade. Since the UK is close by, the EU has to find other ways to level the playing field, i.e. ensure the UK doesn't tamper with workers' rights, lower taxation or lavish subsidies on its businesses, which in the eyes of the EU members would amount to unfair competition.

@grahamellis6029 No, you can be as "sovereign" as you want, but if you want a free trade deal with EU, there are conditions. If your seemingly insatiable appetite for "sovereignty" overrides everything, by all means, walk away. Yet you're still negotiating. Competition is fine. The EU members compete against one another all the time, and, with some protections in place, against the whole world. If you want to compete, make more attractive products -- don't discount them by unfairly lowering your cost basis.
