@herptek It's not either-or. EU members could pitch in to form a joint standing army and maintain territorial forces, a home guard, a national guard or whatever your choose to call it for defending one's hearth and home, consisting mostly of active reservists. The two would complement each other nicely. Many countries already have such an arrangement in place on a national level.

@herptek Read more carefully. What I'm implying is that the national guard would remain under national control, just like the National Guard in the US is under state control, whereas the US Armed Forces are under federal control.

@herptek I think you're being deliberately obtuse. It goes without saying the EU and the USA are not carbon copies of one another. It is a fact, however, that the US National Guard is under state -- not federal -- control. With its large reserve and relatively small professional cadre, Finland already has a national guard of sorts in place, and in my opinion it should retain it if there were to be a standing EU army to complement it. President Stubura could still have his say over this rekindled Suojeluskunta, while the EU army does its own thing.

@herptek I am a serious person. You're just not much of a conversationalist, I'm afraid. Repeating one and the same argument over and over again doesn't amount to a meaningful conversation.

@herptek Duh, it's exceedingly obvious that I came up with the comparison between the EU and the US, and it's an entirely valid comparison. Both have a two-tier structure. In the EU, the top tier is a supranational union, in the US it's a federal union. Below that, the EU has a member tier consisting of 27 countries, while in the US that lower tier is made up of 50 states. The tiered structure is clearly similar between the two. Not same, but similar. Both tiers have -- or in the EU's case, IMHO should have -- their own military organisations, union level and state/country level. I think I need a spool of wire here.
