@ruthsmith2367 It's not like Spain is going to declare British expats persona non grata come Brexit (or vice versa, as you suggested), but the big question is if the UK will continue to foot the bill for the expats' healthcare in Spain. If not, a great many retirees have no choice but to return to the UK. With property prices there dropping sharply, they won't be able to recuperate their investments, let alone buy property in the UK.

@ruthsmith2367 Most British expats in Spain are retirees, whose healthcare costs reimbursed by the NHS. There is reciprocity, but the whole scheme covers retirees and visitors only. The demographic situation is quite the opposite for Spanish expats in the UK, who're overwhelmingly still part of the workforce. Their healthcare arrangements are no different from those of working Brits. If the NHS reimbursements were stopped, the Spanish would no longer treat British retirees without insurance -- or they'd have to be flush with cash. Hence, it's back to Blighty for many. I suppose there are some Spaniards in the UK who're in the same position, but there must be far, far fewer. I don't see myself retiring to the UK. Spain, why not.

Colonists ventured out, too, but I suppose that was OK, since they subjugated foreign lands. Since Spain isn't a colony (save for Gibraltar), it's not OK, right?

@feiningerjones738 I don't get your point. You're juxtaposing Spain and Britain, as if two wrongs make a right.

As EU citizens, they were welcome everywhere in the EU. Now that you're pulling the carpet from under them, you'll be saddled with hundreds of thousands of needy returnees. A huge drain on social services for housing alone.
