Comments by "peabase" (@peabase) on "Belgium's seven-party coalition government sworn in after nearly 500 days of negotiations" video.
At the end of the day, I don't think Belgium can conjure up the will to move forward as a single country. The break-up is long overdue, like the dissolution of a marriage of convenience that turned inconvenient a long time ago.

@0warfighter0 It is too late. The Flemish aren't going to stand for economically propping up a politically failed state for ever. The rifts are only deepening.

@0warfighter0 With all respect, why would you want to keep together those that never belonged together? I for one believe the Flemish and the Walloons would get along much better if they weren't trapped in the same country. It's not like Belgium would undergo the same fate as Yugoslavia. In Belgium's case, the world would just wonder afterwards what all the fuss was about. As far as the Flemish are concerned, the question of separation is not so much a matter of "if" but "how". The former is an easy decision, the latter anything but. Still, a majority of separatists in the Flemish parliament suffices to set things in motion. For that, not even new elections are needed -- just a realignment in party policy.

@rsrs8632 Er, that's nothing out of the ordinary by European standards. Any liberal (that's classic liberal for the Yanks) who wants to scrap those commits political suicide.

@ThePhantazmya Neither the Netherlands nor France have designs on Belgium. It's as if you're stuck in the 19th century, with Napoleon still stomping around Europe. As for population size, there's neighbouring Luxembourg with less than a million inhabitants. The Baltic states, too, have a smaller population each than an independent Wallonia would have. Flanders would outnumber Croatia, Ireland, Finland and Denmark population-wise. You don't make a compelling case, I'm afraid.
