  4. +zbubba The US is the single biggest NATO member by population, so per se it's no surprise that the US spends most. Also, US military interests aren't confined to NATO. Costly US military bases in the Pacific or in the Middle East aren't really serving NATO, or you'll have to redefine its purpose. Generally speaking, Europe assigns a lower priority to defence than the US. You could turn it around and ask why the US chooses to overspend on defence. A military-industrial complex that needs propping up? A social welfare programme in disguise? Or is it a pressing need for military adventurism, like we saw in Iraq? You'll have to explain to me how US dollars pay for European soldiers' salaries. You seem to be confused there.
