You neglected to mention that exploitation of Dutch gas turned northern Groningen into an active earthquake zone. What's really regrettable is that the Netherlands has been slow to invest in renewable energy to compensate.

@N3mdraz That goes without saying. I'm not disputing Dutch contractual responsibilities. I'm saying that no matter what, the Netherlands needs to up its game in tapping into renewable energy sources. If natural gas -- either from Russia or from eartquake-prone Groningen -- is no longer an option, you'd better find other forms of energy. Crying over spilled milk has never paid off.

@N3mdraz I'm Dutch-born. If you are too, it should've been plenty clear. "The grid doesn't allow it" because the Dutch grid isn't designed for it. It can be redesigned for it. In several countries, the grid is perfectly capable of supporting households that rely 100% on electricity for heating and cooking. Actually, the Estonians understand sustainable forestry perfectly. Moreover, as a EU member, they have no choice.

And Putin should never have weaponised energy. He's causing economic hardship all right, but the biggest losers are the Russians themselves. Europe will adapt and overcome, but Russia has lost its biggest market for good.
