  2. Actually, no. Unwittingly, the EU is enabling separatism in Europe. We ended up with our present borders because regions had to band together to ward off unfriendly neighbours. Within the EU, unfriendly neighbours are no longer an issue. The fact wasn't lost on the Catalonian separatists, who saw ther chance. Smaller member states actually bolster the union, because they're forced to co-operate more closely to ward off those truly unfriendly neighbours, like Russia.
