Comments by "peabase" (@peabase) on "Britain risks being excluded from EU's Galileo navigation system" video.
Terry, the British space industry has landed subcontracts worth more than the money UK has poured into Galileo. Unless the UK manages to negotiate a deal akin to those of Norway and Switzerland, or launches a UK-only GNSS substitute (which will easily cost the British taxpayer £4B extra), the future of your space industry looks very bleak. How's that a win?

Terry, you may or may not get your cash-back but at any rate you have to pony up an eye-watering £5B in order to build yourself a substitute for Galileo. That's a very expensive way of saying "up yours" to the EU. Even if we take note, we'll shrug it off with a "those Little Englanders..."

Terry, you may not be concerned, but your industry insiders definitely are. Hence the big stink in Whitehall. Also, for GNSS, you need three dozen or so satellites. The £5B price tag is optimistic. Galileo, even after some cuts, came to £8B. I'd say it's a foregone conclusion that the UK will buy its way back into Galileo, but at what price and which terms (full member or observer), that is the question.

Fact is, the UK enthusiastically invested in this particular toy. The British space industry successfully competed for a lot of lucrative Galileo contracts. No one else seems to be as sorry as you Brits.

@Bessie Hillum Don't flatter yourselves. All of the EU's net payers are in the same position. As a high-tech country with a positive trade balance, our difference is more than made up in the form of increased exports. You Brits took all that for granted, and now you're in for a rude surprise.
