As things are, it doesn't make sense for Hungary to be in the EU. Oh wait, the generous handouts...

jajajah86 I'll leave your silly conspiracy theories for what they are: silly conspiracy theories. It's an irrefutable fact that Hungary gains more from the EU than it puts in. In 2017, Hungary paid €0.8 billion into the EU budget and received €4 billion. You can argue till you're blue in the face that Soros siphons it all off, but even if it were true, it's not on the EU. And which country wouldn't want a free 2% GDP boost? In 2017, Hungary more than doubled its GDP growth thanks to the EU handouts.

@MrLaci0110 Even if there were any truth in your claims, Western European companies aren't the EU or vice versa. Hungary can have an open market economy or go back to a Soviet bloc-style closed economy again, but you can't have it both ways. Sure enough, corporations will explore all legal avenues to avoid paying taxes. Corporate tax breaks are a necessity to attract foreign investments. The EU is a reluctant follower rather than a leader in this respect.

@MrLaci0110 A functioning free market economy is one of the EU's accession criteria. Hungary would have no business in the EU if it didn't comply. We take it for granted that we have to compete on the same terms with economic behemoths like Germany, and we do so rather successfully. Despite your claims to the contrary, it appears you still harbour a secret longing for Soviet times, when things were "simpler". Also, you seem to be playing a blame game, with the EU replacing the USSR in your conspiracy-ridden minds.

@MrLaci0110 Good luck following in the UK's footsteps. Brexit is going to increase their independence in name only. They'll be just as dependent on the EU as before, except they'll no longer have a say in it. Plus they're losing foreign corporations and investors at an alarming rate. It's a good learning opportunity for Hungary, too. Xenophobia was a big contributing factor in Leave winning in the UK. Hungary certainly ticks that box. Maybe Hungary isn't a good team player after the not-so-voluntary Communist experiment? Too bad it's all about team sports nowadays. I mean, you can send a one-player team to the FIFA World Cup, but don't expect to return with the cup.
