@davemurphy2020 De Gaulle saw the UK as a US Trojan Horse. He hasn't been altogether wrong on that score. Britain was them (and still is) keen to do America's bidding, sometimes even to the detriment of Europe.

@davemurphy2020 You're* I'm surprised that this comes as a surprise to you. De Gaulle couldn't haven been more outspoken in his firm stance towards Britain's EEC membership -- "Non." -- and he didn't exactly hide his rationale either. Resentment is too strong a word, but it goes without saying that US and European interests don't always coincide. Also, it can't be denied that Britain has been particularly keen to maintain that special cross-Atlantic relationship. In the words of several British PMs, good relations with the US take precedence over those with France. In the light of this, could you blame de Gaulle for paranoia?
