Denmark wants the Greenlanders to decide their own fate. Incidentally, the Greenlanders -- 85% of them -- don't want their fate to intertwine with that of the USA. How do you propose to make that problem go away? Ethnic cleansing or even genocide? Something more traditional perhaps -- give them blankets contaminated with smallpox?

You're merely speculating that if independence is off the table and the Greenlanders have to choose between the US and Denmark, their choice falls on the US. More likely, they'll stick with the status quo. NATO cannot allow Russia or China to take Greenland. If either tries anything, it immediately triggers Article 5, which means the whole of NATO mobilises in defence of Greenland. Not only may you defend Greenland, you also must, just like all the other members of NATO. Your point is, therefore, moot.

@Bloodless1986 You haven't heard of Pituffik Space Base on Greenland? It's operated by the US Space Force. I'm sure their space cadets with their laser guns would put up a resistance -- of sorts. You can open up more military bases on Greenland, just as long as you ask the Greenlanders nicely. The Danes need their permission, too. Alaska remains extremely sparsely populated. You may wonder why. When it starts to dawn on you, you don't have to wonder nearly so hard about Greenland. Greenland is an euphemism if there ever was one.
