Left or right, populists don't have much to offer in terms of solutions to real problems. Once in power, they'll have to transform themselves into negotiators and problem-solvers, but I fear their voters won't have the patience for it. At best, this wave of populism will pave the way for political renewal, but not thanks to the populists. Hopefully, traditional parties will feel challenged to reinvent themselves and make themselves electable again.

Centre-right parties aren't. It would appear your definition of 'leftist' is the problem here. In Germany, the really rabid lefties -- the deep-red extremists -- have long since been ousted from mainstream politics, and rightly so. On paper the parties still exists: the Marxist-Leninists, the Stalinists, the Trotskyists, the Anarchists, but no one seems to take them seriously any longer.
