David Wilton, the budgetary shortfall isn't going to be made up by increasing the contributions of the remaining members. In other words, the EU's budget will be cut. The net beneficiaries among the EU's members will lose out -- it will take longer for them to catch up with the richer members. I bet especially Eastern Europe will remember whom not to thank for their recovery from decades of communist subjugation and the economic mismanagement that came with it. Inevitably, that will reflect on their future relationship with the UK. And in these trying times, the UK desperately need friends.

David Wilton, your comment epitomises why the UK shouldn't be part of the EU. Lack of solidarity. Some day you'll grow to understand your place in the world. The EU collapsing is a wet daydream of you Brextremists. In your shoes I would worry more about the UK collapsing under Brexit.

David Wilton, the EU has poured half a trillion euros into funds that lessen the economic disparity between its member states. If that isn't solidarity, what is? Interestingly, some "transitory" (read: backward) parts of the UK have eagerly drawn from these funds, too.

Jo Pink, Churchill sold Eastern Europe out, and willingly so, in the great divide of Europe. Especially in your case, there's a debt to repay. We didn't sell them out, but all the same I don't mind investing in Eastern Europe -- an investment which is already paying dividends. Sadly, post-Brexit UK will lose out.
