@pedtrog6443 Typically, damage to undersea cables is from fishing gear or anchors dropped on them. Dragging anchors for miles on end is a different kettle of fish.

Sweden's surface ops need work. Unlike Finland, Sweden failed to throw the book at Yi Peng 3, the Chinese ship that cut two undersea cable near Öland. It was the Royal Danish Navy that finally detained the ship.

Uh, the Finns are Europeans and Finland seized the ship and has detained the crew members suspected of committing the sabotage. Did you expect an immediate execution by a firing squad or some such?

@Digmen1 There's a thing called freedom of navigation. If NATO starts to encroach on it, you can bet your bottom dollar that Russia and China will follow suit. Admittedly, UNCLOS lags behind with to regard to undersea infrastructure in international waters. Damaging said infrastructure comes under piracy, but if a foreign navy or coast guard takes action and it turns out to be unwarranted, they're committing piracy themselves.

@veganbutcherhackepeter You want the US to be a rudderless ship for 4 years. Oh..kay.

@koiguidenishikigoi4972 Everyone knows you hate the UK because of your colonial past, which you can't let go of. We also know that for obscure reasons, you love Russia. It's almost as if you need a master to submit to.

@ Good point. Russia counts among the greatest colonisers in human history, and sadly, it has mostly refrained from decolonising. Somehow Russia's backyard colonialism is exempt from decolonisation. To add insult to injury, Russia now even attempts to recolonise its erstwhile colonial possessions.

It is piracy according to UNCLOS, but the difficulty is proving it. If pirates attack shipping off the Horn of Africa, there will be distress calls and all manner of direct evidence, but sabotage to undersea infrastructure it's much harder to prove. Territorial waters are covered, but in international waters -- including EEZs -- detaining a foreign ship is like making a citizen's arrest. Get it wrong and you'll find yourself in court facing charges of unlawful restraint.

@koiguidenishikigoi4972 The only economy being destroyed here is Russia's -- by its own doing. The 3D pigeon chess master, who heads a gas station masquerading as a country, alienated its best customers.
