@Dandalore Don't discount parliamentary republics with elected presidents, whose powers are suitably limited. An elder statesman (or woman) in the role doesn't go amiss, as didn't Queen Elisabeth II in a more diminished and unofficial capacity. The hereditary nature of a monarchy is a problem, however, because you don't know what kind of charlie you're getting. Presidents can be swapped out, but the charlie is for life.

@simongarthwaite7695 I wouldn't go as far as attributing "huge soft power and gravitas" to the British monarchy -- in its current guise in particular. Personally, I would loathe to foot the bill for keeping a mere figurehead in the lap of luxury. Better actors earn less.
