@UNIVERSAL-UR Radio waves. Some day, you'll learn about them in school.

@UNIVERSAL-UR Don't play expert when you're clear not one. You drown out the signal of the spy balloon. I used to do electronic warfare when I served in the military. Fun stuff.

@UNIVERSAL-UR Sure they know the frequencies used by the Chinese for their satellite comms. Satellite uplink jamming is pretty basic stuff. You're the one putting your ignorance on public display here.

@UNIVERSAL-UR It's about jamming, not blocking per se. The only difference with normal radio jamming is that the beam needs to be carefully directed to hit the satellite's transponder. No biggie, satellite terminals like those of Elon Musk's Starlink do it all the time. The jammer's transmit power just needs to be cranked up sufficiently to drown out the transmissions of the terminal on the balloon. Really, Dave, you could easily find out about this yourself with a simple Google search. I gave you the keywords already: satellite uplink jamming. You choose from hundreds of hits.

@UNIVERSAL-UR Ah, you're slowly but surely starting to see the light. Jamming the satellite's reception capability effectively mutes the balloon. The balloon is like the philosophical tree that falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it. Does it make a sound? Likewise, does the balloon transmit data? Don't put words into my mouth. That's childish.

@UNIVERSAL-UR For gossake, I'm not going to explain to you what is clearly a figment of your own imagination. The jamming -- if indeed there was jamming -- was done from the US, not China. You made the latter up. Ask you physics teacher for help if you can't figure it out yourself.

@UNIVERSAL-UR Did you read any of the hits you got when you googled "satellite uplink jamming"? If you did, your reading comprehension leaves much to be desired. If indeed the Americans jammed the satellite that the balloon communicated with, they aimed an antenna at the satellite, and transmitted a stronger signal that drowned out the balloon's transmissions. The jamming can be done from any location from where there's so-called line of sight. If the balloon was in US air space, the natural place to jam the satellite from is US territory. Why do you insist on China? It makes zero sense. Major powers fly signint aircraft to intercept satellite transmissions. They can easily determine the frequencies being used.

@UNIVERSAL-UR I know you all this by heart, but you're evidently still learning. I suggest you image-google a Starlink terminal. Its dish is the size of a small coffee table. You're basically saying that it cannot establish an uplink satellite connection. You'll break Elon Musk's heart -- there goes another business of his. You can interfere with radio reception from nearby or afar. For the latter you need more transmission power. This, too, is basic RF stuff. You should really educate yourself. Did you talk to your teacher?

In 1998, a Canadian CF-18 fighter jet, which is fitted with the same Vulcan autocannon, tried to shoot down a wayward weather balloon. The pilot expended more than 1,000 20mm rounds on the balloon, but still failed to bring it down. It flew on, across the Atlantic and all the way to Finland.
