@occamraiser The reverse is true. Finland and Sweden are inherently defensible, and Finland in particular is well positioned to exact a heavy price from the Russians, should they get it into their heads to invade. In 1944, the Soviet Union tried to force its way into Finland with a massive advantage in troops and materiel, but its attacks were repelled time and again. Swedish volunteers fought with distinction, too.

@mikestrickhorn4132 Do we have a moral obligation to liberate the Russians in Russia? They always manage to end up with a dictatorial regime oppressing them.

@Mustanaamio7 That may be true, but when at war, ideally you employ overwhelming force. Finnish ground forces might well bring any Russia advance to a halt, but NATO air power would destroy the invaders once and for all. The snaking Russian columns in Ukraine would've been a sitting duck for NATO. The war would've been over in a matter of weeks, not months or years.

@jackneuman5108 True. After the Winter War, Finland frantically tried to find military allies in order to stave off further Soviet aggression. The UK, France, Sweden and then... Germany. The latter was hardly ideal.

@jackneuman5108 Obviously it is hindsight, but true nonetheless. The UK cared more about Swedish iron ore, France proved toothless and Sweden chickened out. The point here is that you don't go frantically looking for friends when the excrement has already struck the rotational air circulation device.
