Matthew Chenault As a native Germanic speaker, don't count me impressed. Americans are among the worst monoglots on this planet.

Matthew Chenault No, no, no. It's pronounced "thus bought".

Matthew Chenault In that case you're a German who doesn't know how to pronounce English.

crosstimbers2 What makes you think I have something against English?
1
crosstimbers2 Nope. We're all polyglots here and still excel in sports. Our kids score high in math and science. So much for your silly theories. On the other hand, you seem to suffer from poor self-esteem judging from the importance that you tacitly place on multilingualism. Like I said, it's all rather mundane here.

defiraphi I'm sure both Wolfgang Petersen and the author knew exactly what they were doing when they named their movie/book. It's not uncommon either that US sub crews casually call their submarines "boats" (but never "ships").

defiraphi I don't understand what you're on about. Naval vernacular is what it is. I'm sure the author of the book, a Kriegsmarine veteran who sailed on German submarines during WW2, is a better authority on the subject than you are. Quite frankly, I couldn't care less what the film is called in French.

Jason Lammers Multilingualism per se isn't the issue, but having to learn another language is an eye-opener. Monoglots are more likely to treat non-native speakers as their intellectual inferiors, while obviously the problem isn't IQ. I'm not saying polyglots are fully immune either, but they're more inclined to spot the mistake and correct their behaviour.
