@angelo3998 After the Winter War, Stalin made the same claim about the Finns not being to attack, but the Continuation War proved him wrong. The Finns quickly retook all the Finnish territory lost in the Winter War.

Add popular support. There was no popular support for a war of conquest in Finland. When the Finnish troops advanced beyond the pre-Winter War border, many soldiers refused to advance any further. Their number was such that the soldiers in question were quietly transferred to fortification duties instead of court-martialled. Moreover, Marshall Mannerheim, the Finnish commander-in-chief, opposed attacking Leningrad, stating that it was inconsistent with Finland's war aims.

@ecyt2447 That's a clear lie. Fascism never gained enough support in Finland to make a real impact. When WW2 broke out, the Finnish Fascists had already been marginalised. Finland did end up going to war with Germany against the USSR, but all the while Finland pursued its own interests, as in reconquering the territory lost in the Winter War. After achieving that goal, Blitzkrieg turned into Sitzkrieg for the Finns. As the Germans struggled to make gains in the High North, the lack of support from the Finns soured relations, which weren't the best to begin with, considering that Germany had sided with the USSR in the Winter War. All that wasn't lost on the USA, which was at war with the Axis powers, but not with Finland.

My grandfather, a seasoned veteran as well, led a group of fresh Swedish volunteers in the latter stages of the Continuation War. He always told us they were the bravest soldiers we ever served with. They were reluctant to disengage when the Soviets were about to break through and when they were ordered to retake their positions, my grandfather had trouble keeping up. Eventually, my grandfather couldn't think of anything else to curb their enthusiasm than to threaten them with writing their grieving parents that they died in vain. After the war, my granddad would join them on hunting trips in Sweden at one of his Swedes' estate, a count no less.

There's a monument in Suomusalmi that commemorates the Ukrainian 44th Regiment, which was destroyed almost to the last man in the Winter War. It's good that you Ukrainians haven't forgotten these victims of war. There must be many more instances where Ukrainians were needlessly sacrificed.

There were some subtle differences, in fact. The Finns used 7.62x53R as their rifle cartridge, while the Russians used 7.62x54R. Mismatched ammunition would affect accuracy somewhat, and automatic weapons, like the Soviet SVT-40, wouldn't cycle correctly in all conditions. When my granddad taught me to shoot large-caliber rifles with an SVT-40 that he brought back from the war, it would often fire two rounds at one trigger pull.
