  4.  @TheDogGeneral  You're painting a naively idealistic picture. Its large size notwithstanding, Greenland is a microstate owing to its minute population. It's not self-sufficient. Denmark hasn't let go because Greenland would've drowned if it had. You may as well ask yourself why the US has barely developed Alaska, although its climate is less forbidding than that of Greenland. Alaska is the largest US state, but also the mostly sparsely populated state -- nearly a hundred times sparser than the US average. There's a sound reason for that.

  5.  @ssir5927  Your carefully crafted analogy is severely flawed. Russia annexes territory by force of arms. Trump plays fanboy to Israel, which did the annexing. So, while Russia is out for Lebensraum for itself, the USA is a mere Mitläufer -- a sympathizer -- in Israel's case. Sure, Trump is now voicing similar ambitions, but knowing Trump and his bluster, it's still a far cry from actually annexing territory, as Russia has done. The truth of the matter is that with rise of China and China, Russia, Iran and North Korea banding together, the USA needs its allies more than ever -- it can ill-afford to alienate its NATO partners over a frozen piece of wasteland.
