@univeropa3363 "Inconclusive" is the official verdict on the 2006 Lebanon War.

@univeropa3363 Sure, Israel had high hopes of neutralising Hezbollah and it failed to do so, but militarily, Hezbollah managed little more than to prove that it's capable of resisting Israeli incursions into southern Lebanon, be it at a very high cost. It could prevent Israel's incursions by not provoking Israel, but Tehran has other ideas.

@univeropa3363 OK, I promise to be more succinct, with your short attention span and all. Tehran won, by perpetuating its proxy war with Israel, which only harms Lebanon. I wonder if the Iranians still feel the same, after Israel started to take the fight to them directly. Syria is becoming quite a graveyard for Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Don't you understand that Israel's adversary here is Hezbollah, which is a state within a state? Apart from Hezbollah, whose orders come from Tehran, Lebanon has no appetite for war.

@daiyumyo Duh, I don't need any coping mechanisms here. You're asininely assuming that I am israeli, aren't you? I was shelled by the Israelis and shot at by Hezbollah, so I can safely say I harbour no love for either side. So you're claiming that Iran doesn't have a hand in Hezbollah's actions? You are surpremely naive.

What keeps you from bolstering UNIFIL or even joining them personally?

grvc44 Duh. During the 2006 Lebanon War, Israel made it very clear that it wasn't fighting Lebanon, but Hezbollah. If Israel can tell the difference, why can't you?

grvc44 In the 2006 war, there were no clashes between the IDF and the Lebanese Armed Forces. Israel didn't declare war on Lebanon, and vice versa, Lebanon didn't declare war on Israel.

@RodneyWolfram You're painting a very hypothetical picture. Hezbollah is by no means an insurmountable military obstacle to Israel. The IDF could easily cut through Hezbollah's defences, but Hezbollah would roll with the punches and switch to insurgency tactics. Israel, with its reservist army, isn't keen on suffering the casualties that would go with it, even if they're expected to be relatively minor compared to what Hezbollah would endure. We've seen it all before.
