You don't know the Chinese. They just can't stop themselves from benefiting from Russia's woes. It goes against their very nature. To them, win-win is acceptable, but win-lose is better. Also, being keen students of history, the Chinese haven't forgotten that a little over a century ago, Russia has among those who benefited from China's semi-colonial status during the 'unequal treaties' period. It's very tempting to think "payback!" in Beijing.

@prakashthapa2165 Afghanistan has vast natural resources. As things stand, those resources are as valuable to the poor Afghans as they would be to prehistoric cavemen. If a post-Putin Russia is wracked by civil war, like some predict, Russia's vast natural resources will be just as worthless till the country (or perhaps, countries) regain some semblance of order.

@Kielermatrosen I suppose Luftwaffe pilots and a hole horde of support personnel will be based in the US when they learn to operate the F-35 -- and how to drop atomic bombs with it.

Why would either country want to sow division between Russia and China? It's not ideal, but it is beneficial if Russia is reduced to a semi-colony of China. As far as autocratic nuclear powers are concerned, a party dictatorship is preferable to a one-man dictatorschip. I mean, the CCP will sacrifice its leader if it wards off an existential crisis. Putin, however, will attempt to sacrifice Russia if he's facing an existential crisis -- which he is. Xi reportedly told Putin to quit the nuclear sabre-rattling, which he has. Not quite poetry in motion, but Realpolitik.

Germany tried its utmost to make 'Wandel durch Handel' work, i.e. to bring Russia into fold of democratic nations that peacefully trade with one another, but to no avail. Russia still thought it okay to start a war of aggression against its neighbour -- supposedly a "brother" country. Putin understands spycraft, not economics.

@goranrajcevic5550 China doesn't need to invade and occupy Russia. It can subjugate Russia with economic means. As a people, the Russians may be apathetic, but it's still more palatable to them to have ostensibly a Russian in charge of the country than a Chinese regional governor.
