  2. ​ @Memovox  The Taliban were just a fledgling member of the Mujahideen coalition when the latter beat back the Soviets. They rose to prominence during the Afghan Civil War, with generous support from Pakistan. I wouldn't jubilate about their martial prowess in defeating "the yanks" either. The Taliban waged a low- to medium-intensity insurgency, being mostly content to wait things out in Pakistan, while the US grew bored with a never-ending war. Strategy-wise, not too shabby, but it won't go down in history as a great military victory.
