Don't we already? There's been quite a bit of consolidation in the defence industry as it is. What's lacking is investment -- government investment. Procurement programs also need to be synchronised, so as to prevent countries from unduly favouring domestic players.

Germany's inoculation against fascism holds firm. I'm more concerned about America's oversized military combined with its democratic decline, which is exacerbated by Trump's apparent comeback.

@TRAZ4004 You're blaming NATO's Top 2, the US and Germany, for neglecting their defences? Okay... Most of Europe's NATO members have already crossed back to the good side in budgetary terms. Spending it is more of a concern, because defence contractors' order books are full and deliveries to Ukraine tend to take precedence.

Fret not. You'll pay less in taxes when the Russians will do the collecting. Of course, your income will plummet dramatically. And you can forget about getting much in terms of services in exchange for your taxes. Apart from mandatory military service for your son, that is. However, you could land yourself a Lada car if things go pear-shaped for your son.

In short, because Europe has an ever-belligerent Russia to contend with. The USA has Mexico and Canada as neighbours, neither of which has imperialistic aspirations. Besides, Putin's willingness to negotiate peace amounts to getting a seal of approval for his colonial conquests in Ukraine... and then some.

@eyaklen4804 Provide credible evidence to back up your assertions, like OSCE Donbas SMM reports. They're all public. Hint: you needn't bother. Russian OSCE monitors came up empty, too. There's no evidence whatsover of Ukraine targeting civilians.

@TRAZ4004 It seems that for a moment, you forgot that the US is in NATO, too. In absolute terms, Germany and the UK are the biggest European contributors to NATO. The UK meets the 2% NATO target. France, which is in third place, is one of those that would meet the 2% target, too, if it would manage to spend its budget. Mind you, France could label its donations of newly-manufactured French arms to Ukraine as defence expenditures, or do same with the compensation that France pays to other EU countries that donate their used military kit to Ukraine. How about your Foreign Military Sales? I'm old enough to remember how we ordered spanking-new F-18s from the US Air Force, and not from the manufacturer, McDonnell Douglas, who still had to manufacture them. Your DoD insisted, like it always does when foreign buyers are concerned.

@TRAZ4004 You didn't specify NATO's European members when you blamed its two biggest contributors for being underspenders (and even if you had, you would've gotten it partly wrong). You'll find that not only Europe (with the usual exceptions) found itself ill-prepared for the type of war that Russia fights in Ukraine. The same applied to the US. Artillery doesn't feature that prominently in Western military doctrine. You had to scrounge around in South Korea for shells to give to Ukraine. I don't quite understand why you choose to blame me for not understanding the complexity of rebuilding defence industries and militaries. Firstly, I haven't suggested otherwise. Secondly, it's not relevant to us. I already hinted that we never let our guard down. When we joined NATO, the fanfare and congratulatory babble was such that it made me blush. We're considered a showcase of sorts for total defence.
