@apollo6154 From a UN perspective, it's ambigious whether Russia is the successor state of the USSR or not. The UN Charter was never amended to reflect Russia's succession, and neither the UNSC nor the UNGA voted about the matter. In other words, Russia's unilateral decision has been tolerated, but never officially accepted. Then there's the little matter of Russia breaking the UN Charter by invading Ukraine. IMHO, for a permanent UNSC member that is supposed to be exemplary in upholding the charter, it's downright unacceptable.

@attilamarics3374 What matters is that 141 UN members condemn Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine vs. 5 members taking the opposite view. What's even more damning is that Russia's annexations in Ukraine go unrecognised by practically all UN members. 190 out of a total of 193 UN members maintain that Russia has no sovereignty over the occupied territories. In case you can't tell, I just destroyed your argument. Russia is waging a war of agression.
