  1. As a Dutch conscript, I had to fill sandbags during an earlier flood. Morale in the Dutch army wasn't at an all-time high then, but it did shoot up temporarily. After all, we were saving the country from going under, literally.

Gorbachev had just started his reforms and there was a lot of opposition to NATO deploying more nukes in the Netherlands. Conscription, too, was losing its relevance. I've since trained regular Dutch Marines for the military world championship. They're highly motivated and they're allowed to put their brains to use, which is rare in the military.
