Duh. If you're far-right, everyone else is leftist to you.

@Srt092 The VVD are best described as 'conservative-liberal'. This must be an oxymoron to the Americans, who've given 'liberal' a whole new meaning. Anyway, they seem to think 'republic' and 'democracy' are mutually exclusive, so what do they know.

@gdiwolverinemale3rd Thanks for proving my point about uniquely American definitions. However, in international company, a republic simply refers to a country that hasn't got a (constitutional) monarch as its (titular) head of state, but rather, a president. Being a democracy in addition to either is a separate matter, but it's by no means incompatible. In fact, the top 10 democracies in the world are a mix of republics and (constitutional) monarchies.

No, why do you ask? Are you a n00b to democracy?

@gdiwolverinemale3rd There you have it. US Constitution. It's not like the UN Charter, which is an international document, and as such bound to use internationally accepted terminology instead of esoteric oddities. You're right about one thing, however. It does seem like US democracy has eroded. The Economist Intelligence Unit, famous for its Democracy Index, has long since recategorised the United States as a 'flawed democracy'.

@soundscape26 You're replying to a known Putin troll there. Everything spells the end of Western civilisation to these drama queens.

@gdiwolverinemale3rd So young yet so cynical.

@psnaris Parliamentary systems are robust. Extremists may make inroads, but because of their very nature, they fail to make a real impact. The irony is that gaining real power, as in forming a coalition government, is a poisoned chalice to them. We're going through similar times as those before and after WW2, when democracies had to weather Fascism and Communism respectively. The stronger ones kept both in check. Admittedly, France, with its presidential system, is vulnerable to extremism. They're so ripe for a Sixth Republic.

@rob2540 So you liked your own comment. A bit like pleasuring yourself in public, innit?
