@Kneejair They did have a civil war. The Northern Alliance successfully kept the Taliban out of Northern Afghanistan before NATO troops arrived.

I wonder how that's going to work. 9/11 triggered NATO's Article 5, and since the Taliban were complicit in the attacks, they became a common enemy. How could NATO spring into action in Asia, in the absence of a casus belli? You're forgetting that NATO is a defensive alliance.

@peedan2 Leave the ad hominems for those who're easily intimidated. Of course the Taliban are trying to placate China. However, they aren't the most trustworthy of partners, and it's doubtful they'll ever manage to take full control of Afghanistan. Moreover, the Taliban have been known to harbour Uyghur militants in the past. China was even caught operating a spy ring in Afghanistan, which tried to root them out.
