  1.  @Robert-xy4xi  It's factually incorrect to say that the Baltic states sided with Germany in WW2. Being occupied by the Soviet Union and then Germany, the Balts didn't have any choice in the matter, which also goes for the Balts being forced to fight for either side. After the war, Churchill insisted that the Baltic states had willingly joined the Soviet Union. Stalin had no objections to that interpretation. Truman whimpered for a bit. But what's certain is that the Soviet Union sided with Germany in WW2.

  2.  @matchaa121  The irony is that many Estonians of Russian ethnicity move to Finland and suddenly find the motivation to integrate. Language-wise it shouldn't make an iota of difference.

  3. You don't know your stuff. India has two official languages, Hindi and English. Zimbabwe holds the record with 16 official languages. But what an bureacratic nightmare that must be. The right to self-determination doesn't equate to the right of separatism. Russia itself would be in a constant state of civil war if that were true.

  5. That's all good and well, but South Africa has 62,027,503 citizens according to the 2022 census. Latvia's population is 1,842,226. So, on average, there's one official langauge for every 5,168,958 South Africans. If we consider he latter number the minimum to bestow official status to a language, Latvia shouldn't have even one official language.

  6.  @FlechAFlech  I have a degree in history. More often than not, Russia has been the aggressor rather than the victim. In varying degrees, the same applies to all great powers of yore. The difference is that Russians still insist they're administering some kind of divine justice when they're in the aggressor's role. Everyone else has atoned for their past crimes. Russia doesn't see the need.

  9. That would be two. Official government languages, that is. And no-one's forbidding Russian-speakers in Latvia to speak their mother tongue.
