Yeah, Britain is frantically trying to matter.

@MrKarlyboy Actually, my experience is the reverse. Asians wonder how they can get along with Britain if Britain can't get along with its neighbours. Moreover, in Singapore, where I (normally) spend most of my time, there's a barely disguised contentment that the British Empire has now truly and utterly come to an end. The Singaporeans were flattered by the Singapore-on-Thames hype, but they were quick to dismiss it as delusional.

@looneytoons171 The difference is, Germany has dealt with its dark past. The UK still has to process many hitherto-closed dark chapters.

@looneytoons171 I get it, you changed topics. We're no longer discussing unatoned old sins, but you're on the lookout for news ones. Yes, Germany could adopt a more assertive foreign policy. That said, I have no complaints when it comes to them condemning the Navalny poisoning, however. The UK could be a bit more vocal there because of the Skripal and Litvinenko poisonings. True, you have 350,000 second-rate citizens in Hong Kong.

No need, the Irish Sea is a good natural boundary.

But the EU members already play by these rules. Member states can't engage in unfair competition by flouting mutually-agreed standards or by slipping free money to their businesses to the detriment of foreign ones. The EU is within its rights to protects its members from a deregulated Singapore-on-Thames. You need to google "level playing field" -- you clearly don't understand the whole concept. The international laws of the sea recognise such a thing as historic fishing rights. French, Belgian, Dutch and Spanish fishermen have been fishing in what are now called British waters for eons. Historic indeed.

@looneytoons171 Newsflash yourself, you seem in dire need of it. The UK hasn't been an EU member since February. You're clumsily referring to the transition period, which ends December 31. It's all very simply. If the UK doesn't agree to a level playing field, the EU will throw up trade barriers at the behest of its 27 (not 28) members, who'll otherwise be hurt by the UK's unfair trade practices. In case you haven't noticed, tariffs and regulations have been used for ages to keep foreign low-cost competitors at bay. Sadly for you, distance is also a trade barrier. That's why Canada, which is on another continent, ostensibly enjoys a better deal that the one the UK can hope to achieve. I totally agree with you, Brexit has been a debacle. The whole world is laughing at you.

@looneytoons171 Now you're effectively railing against your own government, which agreed to the transition period. It serves a mutual interest, allowing all stakeholders to prepare for whatever comes next. It's a pity that so much time has been squandered. Britain hasn't engaged in unfair trade practices yet, but the point of a deal is to prevent that from happening in the future. The EU's suspicion is warranted -- I already mentioned Singapore-on-Thames earlier in this thread. Did you not understand what it entails? So the EU is a tough negotiator. As you noted, examples abound. Still, after the fateful Brexit referendum, you arrogantly congratulated yourselves that the EU trade deal would be the easiest trade deal in history to get. Pride comes before the fall. Balancing the EU's budget is no biggie. Us net contributors aren't paying more into the EU's coffers on account of Britain stopping contributions (if it indeed comes to that). The net beneficiaries will take a hit, meaning less funds will be available for their infrastructure improvements, but they've had it very good for years and years. The EU's pandemic bailout is sorted. With the UK having been hit the hardest in Europe economically and a disastrous no-deal Brexit looming on the horizon, you're on the receiving end of pity.

Exactly which "democrat west" are you referring to? Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal simply because Obama had a hand in it. The rest of the Western signatories -- UK, France and Germany -- are still actively supporting the deal. Iran isn't exactly making it easy on them.

@looneytoons171 The expression you're looking for is "hear, hear". Say, concentration camp, isn't that a British invention?

@looneytoons171 How do Xinjiang and Hong Kong relate to Germany's past? I sincerely hope I don't need to spell out to you how Britain's past relates to Hong Kong. The UK is offering to take in British passport holders and their dependents from Hong Kong. Sounds rather self-evident to me.

In the light of Theresa May dramatically resigning after failing to get the WA through and Boris Johnson stepping into the breach and getting it through with much fanfare, it's deuced odd that the document doesn't matter after all.
