@joekey8464 NATO tried to form a national army in Afghanistan, which, in retrospect, was a grave mistake. Had NATO lavished the Northern Alliance with supplies instead, things would be quite different. Sure, the Northern Alliance could still stand its ground and, with NATO air power, even drive back the Taliban, but that's a political impossibility for now. An opportunity squandered.

You must be joking with your independence day wishes. Afghanistan wasn't under foreign occupation, as it was under the Soviets. The 20-year nation-building exercise did turn into a dismal failure, but being a perpetually failed state under the Taliban is hardly an improvement.
