@dayegilharno4988 If so, it was a very ill-considered move from Putin to annex the Kherson Oblast. It looks like he's ceding Russian territory to Ukraine. The chess master wasn't thinking ahead.

@dayegilharno4988 Wishful thinking. Now, the Russians are even less likely to believe that the annexation of the four oblasts was legit -- or worth dying for. Furthermore, Putin made himself look weaker still, because he wasn't able to defend Russian territory against a much smaller adversary. As a matter of fact, I think we can safely conclude that Putin wasn't thinking, not ahead and not backwards either.

@dayegilharno4988 How exactly did Putin play "the rest of the world"? If anyone, he's played the Russian people. Putin failed to deliver on his promise to raise to standard of living to equal that of Portugal, the poorest EU member at the time. Portugal's GDP per capita remains twice that of Russia. Instead, he squandered Russia's wealth on oligarchs, vanity projects and a military apparatus that dropped from second place in the world to second best in Ukraine. But perhaps worst of all, he's robbed Russia of its future. Russia's poorly diversified, overly hydrocarbon-centric economy isn't going to recover from this.
