I see it differently. The PRC has usurped a monopoly on the BioNTech vaccine that covers Taiwan. If don't know if you're an adult, but if you are, you wouldn't be happy with your parents regaining guardianship over you, right? This amounts to the same thing.

You make it sound like there's an international law that says mainland Chinese companies must have exclusive rights over the Taiwanese market. That is not the case. International law says contracts, even ill-advised ones like BioNTech's with Fosun, must be honoured. BioNTech have failed Taiwan and they're deservedly taking a PR beating over it. The PRC doesn't come out smelling like roses either, but I guess we're all used to the bad smell by now.

It only goes to show that Taiwan has ample reason to keep the PRC at an arm's length. The authoritarian CCP can't be trusted. As a (supposed?) Hongkonger you should know that.

@sibaraku2023 It was foolish of BioNTech to grant an exclusive license to Fosun that covers Taiwan. If they weren't aware that Taiwan eschews being dependent on Chinese pharmaceuticals, they aren't very business-savvy. It may be a language issue with you, but there's no "law" that prevents Taiwan from striking a deal with BioNTech directly. There's a contract, and an ill-advised one at that.

@ScoobyDoo-zp1sq What am I supposed to make of this: "The distribution licensed was in place well before Covid." What exactly are you implying? That BioNTech had a vaccine for a virus that was still unknown at the time? In conspiracyland, that must mean the Chinese tipped them off that they had such a virus in the works at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The funniest thing is that all the resident wumaos are thumbing up your comment.

@ScoobyDoo-zp1sq Tommie boy, you're too big for your britches. There's a press release on BioNTech's website that clearly states that they signed the agreement with Fosun on March 16, 2020. In case you still can't figure it out, that's well after COVID-19 made its worldwide debut. BioNTech's naiveté aside, it begs the question why Fosun, who must've been aware that the Taiwanese won't buy their products, wanted exclusivity for Taiwan as well. Political extortion?

@ianivanpavel859 Nope. Read my earlier comment to clueless Tommie Brady here. Taiwan has a legimate gripe against BioNTech and Fosun, who're both looking like fools and/or nasty bastards. BTW, I think you're one of the latter for rejoicing in the suffering of the Taiwanese.

Our bone of contention was whether or not there was an exclusive agreement between BioNTech and Fosun before the former had announced that they had a COVID-19 vaccine under development. I won the argument by presenting the relevant facts. Now you're trying to make excuses by arguing that the vaccine wasn't ready at the time. Who's claiming otherwise? There's a case to be made for political extortion if Fosun knew they were closed out of the Taiwan market but still demanded exclusive rights for it, effectively cutting Taiwan off. I cannot imagine that they didn't know. If not political extortion, it's scorched earth policy.

David Tao You're not adding anything to the discussion. Investments are not relevant. If you and I would have to invest in every single company that we're planning on buying goods or services from, our choices would be very limited. BioNTech made a bad deal. Fosun made a dubious one -- or a good one if the intention was to torment Taiwan.

@ScoobyDoo-zp1sq Are you still doggedly claiming that Fosun's commercial relationship with BioNTech was not inspired by the latter's COVID-19 vaccine? It's funny, because everything suggests otherwise, including BioNTech's own press release on the matter. If I put a question mark after "political extortion", it suggests it's an allegation, as in trying to find a reason why Fosun acted the way they did. I'm trying to establish motive, in case you want to slap a legal term on it. OK, imagine yourself a legal counsel defending Fosun. How would you explain Fosun wanting exclusive rights that cover Taiwan as well? They know their markets, and they know Taiwan isn't one. Like any large PRC-based company, Fosun have a CCP commissar on their board. He must've been well pleased when presented with the opportunity to stir up trouble for Taiwan. Xi, too, must've been beaming.

David Tao Spare me your self-evident observations, which have nothing to do with the matter at hand. Or are you actually claiming that it's in China's interest to extort Taiwan politically, because there's certainly no financial reward for Fosun if they cut Taiwan off. I assume that by referring to "your guys" and wishing me luck, you jumped to the conclusion that I'm Taiwanese? You're sloppy.

David Tao Intellectual property and investing is what I do for a living. Let me tell you, patents and investments are irrelevant here. Nothing suggests that Fosun has any patents out that cover the BioNTech vaccine. Even if they did, Taiwan and the PRC, both being WTO members, have to respect one another's patents, so Fosun will get their royalties if any are due no matter what. The same goes for their investment in BioNTech -- if any. A boost in sales (even sales projections) jacks up BioNTech's share price. Fosun, if they are indeed a shareholder, profits. I suggest you come with sound arguments if you want to continue this discussion.
