  2.  @98MAzdaMilleniaS  You completely fail to appreciate that the Dutch Republic, along with France and Spain, went to war with Great Britain as a direct consequence of the American Revolutionary War. The Brits were forced to commit considerable naval forces to fight the Dutch, and not only in Europe, but also in the Americas and Asia. I'm inclined to believe that a more focused Royal Navy could have defeated the revolutionaries. Also, it's a bit fanciful to say that Germany (there was no unified Germany then) helped the British. The British army rented mercenaries from the German state of Hesse, Blackwater-style. The Brits also coveted Scottish (i.e. British) mercenaries in Dutch employ, but the Dutch refused to release them.
