Mutual respect? Damage-control, more like. Let's not forget that China was a tacit supporter of the current Afghan government and as an major investor in infrastructure and mining projects in Afghanistan, Beijing was counting on the security provided by the NATO forces. Therefore, it didn't come as a surprise that Beijing publicly voiced its concern about the sudden withdrawal of NATO troops. Of course Beijing is now trying to do damage-control by engaging with the Taliban -- it's got a lot to lose.

@Cryptospirosis I fail to see how a long history is of relevance here. Similarly, US struggles in Afghanistan don't translate into Chinese opportunities, as you seem to suggest. China has had access to Afghanistan and its natural resources for decades, so nothing is changing for the better -- quite the contrary, in fact. Under the Taliban, the security situation is bound to change for the worse and permanently, too.
