@emmawang1999 Once again, you're trying to redefine accepted terms to suit your purposes. A popular mandate is the authority granted by the people to certain lawmakers to govern. Who's to judge what amounts to good governance and competence? The people of course, and we find out by asking them directly. What exactly makes you conclude that most elected officials obtain their position fraudulently? Despite of Trump's blustering, election fraud is exceedingly rare in developed countries. As to breaking campaign promises, there's an efficient correction mechanism for that: elections. The offenders don't necessarily sit out their term, since a no-confidence vote can bring down the whole government if parliament deems the offence serious enough. Mature democracies are remarkably fault-tolerant. Checks and balances ensure that officials can't overstep their authority. Poorly prepared bills don't pass scrutiny. But you still haven't answered my question. If not elections, what then? Flagging problems is OK, but you're expected to suggest a solution as well.

@emmawang1999 Er, we have a thing called full suffrage. Anyone above 18 can both vote and stand for office. Now you seem just ignorant.

@emmawang1999 Now your ignorance is really showing. If you look at the countries that top the Human Development Index, your should be able to tell that the majority have no colonial past as in having had colonies. Rather, there are plenty of those that were subjected to colonialism themselves at one time or another, such as Ireland, Australia, Iceland, Finland, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. If looting and plundering makes for rich countries, why isn't China in the Top 20? You certainly have a very rich history in that respect, with China's colonialism even persisting to this day in Tibet, to say nothing of the neo-colonial Belt and Road Initiative.

You have to try to find a new term to describe your political nirvana that eschews elections. Democracy is about elected representatives -- and in order to elect them you need elections. How else do you ensure that the people's representatives are the ones the people actually want? It's not a coincidence that the overwhelming majority of the countries that top the Human Development Index are democracies. Real democracies, that is, ones that stage elections.

It's no wonder considering that a sizable part of the Hongkongers either defected from Communist China themselves or are direct descendants of such defectors. Once again, they're under the Communists' thumb.

@emmawang1999 You're not answering my question. If elections aren't it, how do you ensure that those who govern you have a proper popular mandate? No, elections alone don't ensure good governance. But a government without a proper popular mandate stokes civil unrest, like we've seen -- and will continue to see -in Hong Kong. The mainland Chinese may still lack the awareness that they have unmet political rights, but that in most countries, the populace is keenly aware that they get to pick their representatives - even a dolt like Trump.

@emmawang1999 Did you not read my comment which mentioned the Human Development Index and its top 20 being dominated by democracies? I think you're desperately trying to convince yourself that you're not worse off, but you can't even get your arguments right, let alone suggest alternatives.
