@novainvicta I don't think you quite understand IP law. Unless there's a valid patent in the country in which a product is manufactured and/or sold, it's free game. Just like everyone else, the Chinese steal IP, but likewise, they can't export products that contain stolen IP to countries that do respect IP law. Lately, China has made a huge effort in applying for patents of their own. They'd like them respected as well, so they're somewhat responsive to demands for reciprocity. Sadly, it's work in progress, since Chinese courts almost always rule in favour of the domestic party, no matter whether that party is the defendant or the plaintiff.

You bet we can't compete with sweatshops. I'd rather have rules than factories with barred windows to prevent suicidal workers from jumping to their deaths.

@aliamin2662 That's an interesting viewpoint. Europe's human rights record is perhaps not entirely spotless, but it is ne plus ultra. And where might you be from?

@lacdirk Also, trade deficits are misleading. To a great extent, China's trade surpluses are caused by fact that its strength is final assembly, which adds relative little value, yet the full value of the products is taken into account when the trade balance are calculated, as if China produced all the components and did all the R&D as well. Especially in electronic products there's a hidden deficit with countries such as Japan and Korea, which actually manufacture the high-value components.

@lacdirk No, it's not taken into account, especially with today's complex supply chains that involve dozens of manufacturers in almost as many countries. The iPhone is a textbook example. Google "How the iPhone widens the US trade deficit with China."
