In Soviet China, democracy is selfishness.

It seems that every country with a democracy deficiency is susceptible to colour revolutions. As to China, the question is not if but when.

So China can never democratize? If so, China will always drag HK down democracy-wise. Sucks to be Chinese...

@nda6228 Sorry, no, I had a look at the Democracy Index, and I couldn't spot a single Western country that scored below Hong Kong.

@nda6228 In what way has Covid-19 eroded democracy in the so-called West? I don't particularly care for US-style democracy with its stifling duopoly and the intense polarization that it causes, but all the same it's an example of democracy faring well under the pandemic. Trump's childishness doesn't diminish the fact that Americans voted in record numbers. Also, numerous other countries have held elections with decent voter turnout. All that is in stark contrast to Hong Kong. Your fledgling proto-democracy has taken a body blow in the form of China imposing its draconian security law.

@pipilu3240 Yes, it sucks to be British, but that's on account of their ongoing nightmare known as Brexit. But what's more relevant to this discussion, it sucks to be you, since you think whataboutism makes for a strong argument.

@allansh828 Why keep harping that Western democracy is unsuitable for China? I'd welcome any form of China-style Eastern democracy, but there's no such thing. There's only Xi-style autocracy.

grimm reaper How's Sanders relevant to this discussion? You sound like a navel-gazing American.

@allansh828 So that's an excuse to give democracy a miss? Many countries struggled to transform themselves into a stable democracy. I can't see why China can't get it right if India could.

@kushastea3961 Fact is, India has democracy, China does not. The pandemic and its handling in India is a separate matter. You cherry-pick your examples. South Korea and Taiwan have been lauded for their handling of the virus, and both of them are democracies. Incidentally, we're one of the top-ranked democracies in the world and we haven't colonised anyone or committed genocide, like ever. The same cannot be said about China. Your grasp of European and world history is piss-poor. Your rejection of democracy implies that you deem the Chinese -- with the exception of a few CCP autocrats -- too dumb to have a say in the governance of their country.

Fine, if "you" don't want "Western" democracy, then what kind of democracy do you want? Is there such a thing as Eastern democracy? Sorry, I have to put down my glass of milk, or I'll blow it out through my nose from laughing.
1
@Annodite Oh, in your book it's either direct democracy or no democracy, but tried-and-true representative democracy doesn't cut it for you.

@einfobd9546 You didn't get the meme. Google "Soviet Russia".
