Argentina needs change, but electing a right-wing populist is like peeing your pants. First you feel warm and cosy, but then cold and miserable.

@grimaffiliations3671 I'll have a go. Bolsonaro was an eco-disaster personified. His anti-vaxxer antics caused a lot of unnecessary deaths. Brazil suffered diplomatic isolation as foreign leaders gave the man wide berth. Democratic instutions suffered and political polarisation worsened. All in all, Bolsonaro did a lot of deconstruction, but little construction. Not a very constructive leader, in other words.

@yp77738yp77739 Not only did Trump not start any new wars, but he stopped one, too. Trump "negotiated" an end to the War in Afghanistan. The Art of the Deal, applied to geopolitics. Enough said.

This is not political rejuvenation, this is political dumbification. Being Dutch, you should know that.

Populism is per definition opportunistic. Right-wing or wrong-wing, populists will brush ideological concerns aside if there's an opportunity to boost their popularity -- on the short-term.

@grimaffiliations3671 It's not quite that bad. There's a precedent in Montenegro adopting the euro without being an EU member. Like Montenegro and the EU, Argentina will just have to model its economy after one of the poorer states in the US, in the hope that its interests are served that way. It's not like the US will try to manipulate the Argentinian economy by tinkering with its own.

Argentinians have been converting their currency at every possible juncture. You needn't tell them that.

Why, "the West" is right-leaning, especially in economic policy. The combo of right-wing and populism is what makes it scary, because the right-wing part all too often slips to the far right. Mind you, populism in combination with any wing is scary, but the leftists aren't so much into inciting the masses any longer.

Russians must be re-enactors then, re-enacting battles of yore. They can't win otherwise.

@Chebka_ True dat. It's like supremo populist Elon Musk buying Twitter, and running it into the ground by firing the bulk of Twitter's staff.

@pac1fic055 You'll find that DW has called Venezuela's Maduro and, before him, Chavez populists.

@Mariana-un7uj He's pandering to the masses, like a true populist.

In other words, will he retake the Malvinas?

@Johnstone72 You understand correctly. I'm sure the Argies talk about the Malvinas War, however. I also remember how the boys and girls on our street sang: "We are going to the Malvinas to kill a few Argentinas". My parents, both war orphans, were shocked.

@grimaffiliations3671 Sure, you can't use devaluation as a tool any longer. Being a colony implies there's a colonial master. I doubt the US can assert its mastery over Argentina with currency alone.
