@mijicmugendo China hasn't had democracy like ever, aside from an abortive experiment in the early 20th century. Does that mean the Chinese mainlanders should be condemned to eternal dictatorship? I don't see how you think long-gone British imperialism is a valid argument against democracy in this day and age. It's not up to the Brits to strive for democracy in Hong Kong. That's the prerogative of the Hongkongers.

@weehay5349 Being Nordic and a long-time Singapore resident, I know all too well in which areas Singapore lacks behind. While still single, I lived in a boutique condo just off then-megatrendy Muhamed Sultan Rd, while a neighbour of mine lived in a tarp-covered cargo bike on an nearby empty lot. The challenge with good governance is that the good part is subjective. Without democracy, you can't really gauge if it's to the liking of the populace, so there's no telling if it's good. I mean, you can run a prison efficiently, but the inmates may not be all that happy. Perhaps a better measure of good governance is the UN's World Happiness Report. The Nordic countries top the list, while they're also top democracies according to the EIU Democracy Index. Alas, Singapore is topping neither list -- not even close. And don't get me started about China.

The Nordic countries have no brain drain issues to contend with. On the contrary. I remember how Singapore made all kinds of overtures to keep us. My PR interviewer suggested a fast track to full citizenship. When I respectfully declined, she confessed we were the hardest to convince. Singapore even commissioned a love song about Finland, which amused us no end. Your accusation that I'm leeching off Singapore is an interesting one. I worked for two multinationals, both Nordic and both leaders in their field, with their regional headquarters in Singapore. Despite Singapore's relatively small market size, we employed mostly Singaporeans in serving the whole APAC market. You're biting the hand that feeds you. If you must know, I'm domiciled in Luxembourg nowadays, which, as it happens, enjoys a higher GDP per capita than Singapore. It's happier, too, and a full democracy. No colonialist past either, just like the Nordic countries. You're running out of excuses. Say, you're not the same pro-Communist Singaporean who turned racist on me a while ago? When I reminded the person of Singapore's strict sedition laws, he (or she) promptly deleted all his comments and cancelled his YouTube account. At any rate, you seem to be saddled with a similar abrasive personality. You'd better watch your step.

I asked you if you were the same Singaporean who foolishly mistook me for an Indian and then proceeded to make racist comments about dark skin colour. I have to say, the similarities are striking. Just like him, you're boasting about Singapore's GDP per capita, calling foreigners leeches and you're highly enthusiastic about the Communist regime in China. Also, you're very confused. I speak Germanic languages all right, but not natively. On the other hand, I can spot scores of grammatical errors in your comments.

@thewolfofswingthat2035 I suppose devolution hasn't caught your attention? Now devolution is turning into independence, at least if the Scots have their way. And it's not just the UK. Belgium has been plagued by separatism for, like, ever. To delay the inevitable, the country is split into autonomous regions, with Brussels being one of them. If Belgium disappears from the political map of Europe -- and I believe it will in my lifetime -- Brussels will reappear as an independent nation. Do you see the analogy?
