Will you ever tire of using colonisation as an excuse for everything? We're Westerners all right, but we endured colonisation as well. We enjoyed a 30-year head start on you in becoming independent, but it doesn't occur to us to blame colonisation, like ever. Funny that.

@gcdumful Again, we played no part in colonising anyone -- not India, not Africa, yet you're only too eager to tar every Westerner with the same brush. I wrote that "we enjoyed a 30-year head start" on independence, which means 1947 -- the year India gained independence -- minus 30 years. Well? Arithmetic can't be that hard. Furthermore, if you want to compare notes for how long we each endured colonisation, well, for us that would be from 1150 onwards, which means nearly 800 years. So, by rights we should whine thrice as hard as you do. But miraculously, we don't whine at all. We've never been keen on coal. My great-grandfather was a stoker with the railways, but he never touched a lump of coal in his life. Biofuel, the newfangled name goes.

@harsimarsingh3676 Let's see. New Zealand officially became a British colony in 1841. Independence followed in 1947. Ireland came under English rule in 1603 and gained independence in 1949. So, no cigars for anyone.

@Pshaurk I haven't got the faintest idea where you're going with this. New Zealand is irrelevant, but just so you know, what I wrote about New Zealand becoming a British colony and gaining independence are irrefutable facts. My grandfathers were both born under colonial rule. In our case, we're talking 25 generations of colonial rule, whereas in yours it's 10 generations. I could start about a brutal climate and infertile lands, but that would sound a lot like whining. I'll leave the whining to you.

Which West? It's a rather large number of countries with very varied histories. Only a few owe India in any conceivable sense.

@lakshyarana7054 It's interesting that India wants a permanent seat in the UN security council, yet you singularly fail to condemn a clear violation of the UN Charter. When confronted, you cite -- of all things -- Cold War history. It's as if you never got the memo that the USSR collapsed. Like so many of your compatriots, you use the "the West" as a catch-all for all ills. You're no better than the snooty British colonial authorities, who described the lot of you as "those wretched Asians".

@lakshyarana7054 Weird -- somehow you still think you need to subjugate yourselves, if no longer to Britain, then to Russia or China. You clearly fear upsetting them should you ever act independently. The real hypocrisy is that you accuse us of being a US pet, but by your own tacit admission, you smooch up to not one but two of the biggest despotic regimes. Like I wrote earlier, India is no UNSC material till it grows a backbone and a moral compass. Oh, we haven't bought any Russian oil or gas since May. Refused to pay in roubles.
