In parliamentary democracies with proportional representation, political parties cannot afford to wage a holy war against one another, because today's political enemies can be tomorrow's coalition partners. Our right-wing populists are beginning to get their heads around it. Their voters, not so much.

There's China and Russia, too. Trump is not good for China either, which aims to export its way out of the doldrums, but Trump is not having any of it. Trump is good for Russia, however, because Trump aims to sell Ukraine down the river.

@VadimBolshakov There will be other terms for Russia. Russia will find out that an uneasy peace is nothing but the continuation of sanctions and exclusion.

It's a known fact that Europe -- like the world at large -- has an overwhelmingly negative view of Trump. When last surveyed, Trump popularity was down there with Putin's and Xi's.

@TotalWater-d2o Ask the British The Economist -- the recognised authority on the matter with their Democracy Index -- and they'll say Europe was the most top-10 democracies in the world. Oh, and your British friends downgraded the US to 'flawed democracy' after Trump was elected president in 2016. Something about the diminished trust in America's democratic institutions. Trump's swamp-draining and assorted conspiracy theories sure are testament to that.
