Who knows, the controllability of the plane was such that landing would've posed a problem, no matter where. But yeah, the delay may have compounded the problem.

@CuteCatWantsPat I wouldn't credit NATO with the dissolution of the Russian Federation -- if indeed it happens. Many Russians, especially in the western parts of the country, are fully aware that their foreign neighbours have done much better in recent times. There's no reason why Kaliningrad, for example, couldn't become the fourth Baltic Tiger if it came under new management -- a management of their own choosing, that is.

@vanrex7682 Depriving the Azeri airliner the opportunity to make an emergency landing is possibly criminal, but the question remains, had it led to another outcome if they had attempted a landing in Grozny? It looks like the pilots tweaked the engines' thrust to keep the aircraft flyable, but it wasn't landable. If the shrapnel had pierced the fuel tanks, running out of fuel was a concern, but it doesn't appear to have run out.
