The pipeline to China doesn't come close in matching the western ones in capacity, and building more pipelines is nigh-impossible without Western technology. Besides, the East is eager to benefit from Russia's pariah status and buy its oil and gas on the cheap. We're already seeing this in the price difference between Brent and Urals crude. In case you can't figure it out by yourself, Russia is not only losing market-share, but also, revenue. Summa summarum, Russia isn't going forwards, but backwards. Fast.

  2.  @HarryPotter-ym8co  Unaffected? Do you think Russia can teleport the pipelines going west to go east instead, just like that? The gas pipeline going to China has far less capacity than the western ones. It's very doubtful Russia can increase capacity without access to Western technology.

  10. Talking about painful sanctions, Russia is self-sanctioning itself by ruining its future as a supplier of hydrocarbons to its biggest market, Europe. Europe is in for short-term pain, but for Russia, the pain will be chronic.
