@markiowa5437 Let's explore your German aircraft carriers. Carriers make easy targets for modern subs, as the US Navy has found out time after time. Not only that, the Baltic Sea, with its narrows and shallows, makes a poor area of operations for big vessels. Even more so that elsewhere, ultra-quiet AIP subs would make mincemeat out of them. Incidentally, Germany makes the best AIP subs. Stealth bombers. Germany just ordered 35 F-35s for NATO's nuclear sharing role. How many megatons of destruction are needed?

@paulcunningham2859 I'm asking because West Germany had decent armed forces. They started cutting after reunification, which was in 1990. That's a little over 30 years ago.

@paulcunningham2859 West German spending on defence stood at 3% GDP when Reagan was elected. That's twice as much as it was before the recently announced increases and well above the NATO-mandated 2% of GDP.

Your military is partly a social welfare program. We don't count their pensions or healthcare as military expenditure.

Iceland had better look into this defence thingy. Don't be a freeloader.

@jenson1896 It's a rule of thumb that if you can't control your own territory, someone else will come and control it. And that's exactly what happened in WW2.
1
@jenson1896 I would expect you to know your WW2 history. Iceland was occupied -- by the Allies. Since you couldn't defend yourselves, they reasoned that they'd have to do the honours.
1
@jenson1896 Yet you think it's not worthwhile to defend yourselves.

How young are you?

@Amogus • 7.7B views • 5 seconds ago Don't flatter yourselves unduly. The F-35s that Germany is buying are replacing older Tornados in NATO's nuclear sharing role. For other roles, Germany is still committed to a Franco-German fighter that's under development. Besides, 35 F-35s isn't huge number for the Luftwaffe, considering that Germany's much-smaller neighbours have ordered a similar number or even more.
