Don't get too comfortable. The moment the Brits realise they can't get a Canada-style free trade agreement, to say nothing of the Canada+++ FTA they think they're entitled to, they'll do a reverse spin-off where they'll become a Canadian province.

phil mill I guess that in your clumsy and confused way (the EU-27 actually enjoy a trade surplus), you're trying to say that the UK has a £80 billion trade deficit with the EU and that that puts the EU at a disadvantage in a possible tariff war. All things being equal, that would be the case, but things are far from equal. The UK has a much smaller economy compared to that of the EU-27. It's like a welterweight challenging a super-heavyweight. A better apples-to-apples comparison is that if trade between the UK and the EU were to grind to a complete halt on Jan 1st 2021, UK exports would be cut by 44%, while only 8% would be shaved off the EU's exports. That's because you'd be losing 27 trade partners; we, just the one.

fluffymufti Squeezing a pimple on our nose is a better analogy. The UK is far more exposed to trade disruptions than any individual EU member. As a case in point, if bilateral trade were to grind to a complete halt, our exports would be down 4.4%. Yours, 45%. That's what I call a crippling blow.
