  1. Instead of jealousy I feel dread. China is a ticking time bomb. Either way, no matter whether there's increasing wealth or economic decline, the Chinese will demand democratic rights. That'll put a damper on economic development.

  5. ​ @meganh9460  Stop making stuff up. Practically every nation is protectionist to some degree. The US is not and has not been an exception. Neither does the EU stand out in the WTO stats. Brazil, for instance, has more than three times the tariffs. India, more than twice.

  6. ​ @meganh9460  If I'm lying, by extension the WTO is lying, too. The US has a long history with protectionism. Suggesting otherwise is just self-congratulatory babble, which you Yanks excel in. The WTO lists a weighted average tariff of 3.0% for the EU, whereas the figure for the US is 2.4%. We're talking a 0.6% difference. The EU figure is skewed by agricultural tariffs, which have always been a contentious issue among EU members. Us Northerners have no direct interest in maintaining them, but they are indirect consequences, such as South-North migration.
