The same applies to Gibraltar. Spaniards and other Schengen citizens are waved through at the border. UK citizens have to produce a passport, even if they fly in directly from the UK. That's sovereignty for the Brits.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time before you'll start whining about the unfairness of it all. Only the whining is a constant.

No worries. We were just rendered immune by a vaccine that goes by the name "Brexit".

Services are uncharted territory as far as the current deal is concerned. If the EU is taking a tough stance on those, the UK is in a very dark place.

TheNewblackdog No can do -- that would light the fuse for renewed Troubles in Northern Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement guarantees dual British-Irish nationality for all those born in NI before 2005. I hear even protestant unionists have been queueing for Irish passports.

TheNewblackdog Singling out EU nationals while allowing Brits with additional non-EU nationalities to retain their UK passport would be problematic. I would expect the European Court of Human Rights to be overwhelmed by complaints. In case of a blanket ban, there could be an adverse effect in expats opting to retain their British nationality instead, overwhelming your social security and healthcare systems upon their return. Don't forget that your messy imperial past has left you with a diaspora of mostly elderly expats. Not practical -- that's my assessment and I'm familiar with the intricacies of juggling multiple citizenships. I had to make an effort to keep the two I was born with. The third I got just in case.

TheNewblackdog There are restrictions when it comes to sensitive positions such as serving in the military. In my case, the Dutch authorities got into a flap and when they conscripted me and I truthfully told them I had a conflicting appointment: I was about to be deployed to Lebanon as a UN peacekeeper. That spelled the end of my alternative military career in the Royal Netherlands Army, but judging from the anticlimactic two weeks I did spend there, it was no loss. Immigration laws are rather relentless. If you lose your nationality, you don't automatically receive work and residence permits, if at all. Been there, done that.

They did it to themselves. Blundered into it, to be exact.
