Comments by "peabase" (@peabase) on "UK signs defense deals with Sweden u0026 Finland - Could Ukraine follow? | DW News" video.
@worldwide8587 NATO fighting wars everywhere is a canard. NATO's article 5 has only been triggered once, in response to the September 11 attacks. The NATO operation that followed, ISAF, enjoyed the UNSC's unanimous support. Sure, the US has military adventures now and then -- most notably the Iraq War -- but those are extramarital affairs as far as NATO is concerned.

@Kitiwake Every Finn remembers the empty promises made by the UK in 1939, during the Winter War. Self-servingly, Britain was after Sweden's iron ore. Helping Finland was just an excuse.

@AT-kx6fj It's called Western betrayal for a reason. Not just Poland suffered it, but the Baltic states, too. Churchill and Roosevelt had no qualms about quietly selling all of them, Finland included, down the river.

@robsab531 I wouldn't mind terribly if the USA leaves NATO. But once relegated to a regional power, why and what about should the US negotiate with Putin?

@Ryong84 Some years back, both Sweden and Finland made constitutional arrangements to allow NATO to operate on their soil in the event of a crisis (read: Russia attacks). Therefore, a (solicited) NATO intervention couldn't be construed as an attack on either country by any stretch of the imagination.

@worldwide8587 There was no obligation for NATO members to participate in any of these ops apart from Afghanistan. As I tried to explain to you, NATO secured an iron-clad UNSC mandate for it. Russia and China both supported IFOR for as long as it lasted. As to the Iraq War, it nearly tore NATO apart, because famously prominent members like France and Germany refused to have anything to do with it. Your clearly false assertion that it indeed was a NATO operation only hurts your credibility.

@worldwide8587 Are you dyslexic or just thick in the head? In actual fact, NATO's had two training missions in Iraq. No combat, just training, as per the Iraqi government's explicit request. My cousin trained Kurds in Erbil to fight ISIS. You're taking this guilt by association to the extreme. Are you going to accuse NATO of the Vietnam War next? When the next mass shooting takes place in the US, is NATO responsible, too?

@CollapseReport Who's copy-pasting? As to Russia being the big problem, you're preaching... not to the choir, but to the clergy -- and as a layman preacher.

@robsab531 The US didn't manage to drag NATO into the Iraq War. How do you explain that?

@vinm300 You're trying to demonise France and unfairly so. Diplomats the world over are racking their brains how Putin could save face so as to agree to a ceasefire. A peace treaty is another matter altogether. Every history major knows the answer to the trick question: when did WW2 start? Evidently Macron knows, too.

@robsab531 I'll go ahead and assume that you practise what you preach. So, if you think Ukraine should surrender, I'm assuming you would, too, in similar circumstances. And you accuse the French of being surrender monkeys. It's "Ukraine", not "the Ukraine". Or should we refer to the US as the "United Colonies" again? We don't need to think about fallout shelters. We have them.
