The F-35 fills a niche. Germany is opting for the type because it's one of few that is cleared to carry the B-61 nuclear bombs that are stationed in Germany. They're not replacing the Eurofighter, which lacks said capability, nor is the Franco-German future fighter program being reconsidered.

@georgehouston6327 That's what discussions are for, right? We certainly don't need any more Putin trolls shouting their slogans and then slinking back into their holes.

@fullmetal71481 Not of course. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet was initially considered for the same role, but now it looks like Germany needs to spend a lot of money in a hurry. The pricey F-35 is ideal in that respect.

@fullmetal71481 It's still very niche. To give you an idea, we recently ordered nearly twice as many F-35s. Germany should order close to a thousand F-35s to arrive at the same per capita ratio.
